A Mural’s Journey: From Dream to Reality
In the midst of turbulent times, Daren Todd, a local artist and musician, found clarity and purpose. He realized it was time to chase his dreams and dedicate himself to art full-time, leading to the birth of his art business, Art Larger Than Me. His first significant project was a mural located in the Humboldt neighborhood. This vibrant piece honors the Black Lives Matter movement and commemorates those who have lost their lives to police violence in the United States.
While Daren was immersed in painting, he met Jeana and Collin, two passionate community members and homeowners. Their serendipitous encounter sparked a conversation about creating another mural in the area. As they stood in front of Daren’s first mural, the excitement was palpable, and the idea for a new project began to take shape.
New Mural Design Celebrates the Rich History of the Neighborhood

Jeana and Collin shared stories about a women’s group from the 1960s that planted many of the beloved cherry trees in the Humboldt and Albina neighborhoods. They also spoke of the powerful history of resistance by the Black community in the area. Inspired by these stories, Daren delved into Portland’s Black history, uncovering poignant moments that he transformed into mural form.
The proposed mural featured six panels, each depicting different aspects of the neighborhood’s history and the motifs requested by Jeana and Collin. These include cherry blossoms, street posts, and images of the current protests. The artwork is accompanied by an estimated timeline and a breakdown of costs to bring this vision to life.
Community Engagement Brings Dreams to Life
To support the creation of this mural, a GoFundMe campaign was launched, inviting the neighborhood and community to participate in this meaningful project.
Jeana and Collin, the fence owners, had long dreamed of turning their stretch of fence into a piece of art that honors the history and resilience of Black communities in the Albina-Humboldt neighborhood. The mural’s location along the Going St. public walkway ensures that it will be a shared piece of art for everyone in the community. They are thrilled to support the work of a young artist who is courageously pursuing his dreams.
