At a time when our news cycle is flooded with negative stories of greed, this story stands out and reminds us that our community is bringing up some really good kids. In Bend, Oregon, high schoolers are breaking the mold and showing the world that they are anything but typical. Through their involvement with Sparrow Clubs, high school students like Emerson Williams and Cameron Gadsby are using their talents to uplift community spirit and make a real difference in the life of a brave little girl battling B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia and her family.
Juliet’s Journey: A Little Warrior
Juliet, the adorable two-year-old at the center of this year’s campaign, is fighting a tough battle against B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. She’s on a two-year aggressive treatment plan that includes spinal taps, IV chemotherapy, and steroids. Despite losing her ability to walk and her appetite, Juliet’s spirit is unbreakable. The goal of the fundraiser is to provide financial support to Juliet’s family during this challenging time. (Find out more about Juliet’s Journey HERE.)
Sparrow Clubs: Spreading Wings of Hope
Sparrow Clubs is an Oregon-wide organization that pairs “sparrows”—children with serious medical conditions—with schools. These schools then rally their communities to raise funds and support their sparrows. One example is the Thunder Pageant at Summit High School, where fundraising meets fun in a remarkable event. The core values of Sparrow Clubs—Compassion, Conscience, Community, and Character—are at the heart of everything they do. These values guide the students’ actions and inspire them to make a positive impact. (Find out more about Sparrow Clubs HERE)
Summit High School’s Thunder Pageant: Where Fun Meets Fundraising
At Summit High School, students are on a mission to raise money for their sparrow, Juliet. 10 couples will strut their stuff in the Thunder Pageant, showcasing talents like lip sync battles, dance-offs, and even food-eating competitions. This event is not just about raising funds; it’s about bringing the community together for a great cause.

Emerson Williams and Cameron Gadsby: The Charge Behind the Thunder Pageant
Introducing Emerson Williams, a senior at Summit High School. Emerson, an avid basketball and water polo player, spearheaded last year’s Thunder Pageant, raising over $65,000 for a local family. Her dedication and compassion continue to inspire those around her. This year, she is joined by Cameron Gadsby, a 17-year-old senior who shares her passion for making a difference. Cameron, a golfer and rugby player, is excited to be part of Sparrow Clubs’ efforts. His enthusiasm is infectious, making him a key driver of this year’s fundraising campaign. Together, they aim to raise another transformative amount of funds. They came to speak at Cascade Hasson Sotheby’s International Realty Office in Bend, Oregon, about how the community can donate to this very special cause.

Fundraising Fun and Goals
Just two weeks into the campaign, these amazing students have already raised around $7,000. Inspired by last year’s success, they are determined to raise even more to support Juliet and her family. The Thunder Pageant, with its mix of talents and performances, adds a fun twist to the fundraising efforts, encouraging everyone to get involved.
“That students take the time to write down in their own words what helping Juliet meant to them. Some students take the opportunity to write a personal reflection, a personal message to Juliet, a message of encouragement and love. And we’re able to collect those vouchers at the end of the project and give them to these families as an additional gift. So it’s not just about the money. It’s about overall, all-encompassing support,” said Sparrow Clubs Executive Director Matt Sampson on Central Oregon Daily News (Summit High School joins Sparrow Clubs to help girl battling leukemia, Central Oregon Daily News, Dec.14, 2024, https://www.centraloregondaily.com).
