Donald Falk: The Value of Showing Up

After more than three decades in Portland real estate, Donald Falk has learned that some of the profession’s most important work happens beyond the transaction. It happens in conversations where ideas are exchanged, standards are shaped and the future of real estate is discussed.

Donald believes those conversations matter. That is why he continues to show up.

Licensed in 1993, Donald joined The Hasson Company, now Cascade Hasson Sotheby’s International Realty, in 1999. Today, he is based in the company’s NE Portland office, bringing more than 30 years of experience to his clients, colleagues and community.

His path to real estate was not a conventional one. Donald studied journalism at Texas A&M University, worked in the energy industry and later represented furniture and textile manufacturers to architects and interior designers. Those experiences helped shape his curiosity about people, places and design.

That curiosity is still part of who he is. Donald loves to travel and is an eclectic art collector, drawn to pieces with history, culture and an interesting story. He approaches his professional life with much the same mindset.

“I’ve always believed experience is most valuable when you keep building on it and then share what you’ve learned,” Donald says. “There’s always something new to understand and always something you can contribute.”

That philosophy has taken Donald from local leadership to service at the state and national levels. Today, he represents the Portland Metropolitan Association of Realtors® as a director at the National Association of Realtors®. He also serves as an Oregon Realtors® director and Executive Committee member, with additional work in professional standards, housing opportunities, advocacy and diversity initiatives.

With his current NAR term concluding this year, Donald is seeking the opportunity to continue that work. He brings experience at multiple levels of the profession, relationships built over years of participation and an understanding of how national conversations ultimately affect advisors, clients and communities back home.

For Donald, that connection is important. His national involvement gives him a broader view of the issues shaping real estate, while his work as an advisor keeps those conversations grounded in what is happening locally. He brings that perspective home to his clients, his colleagues at Cascade Hasson Sotheby’s International Realty and the organizations he serves.

Colleagues have long sought Donald out for perspective, and he is generous about sharing what he knows. He believes experience is not about having every answer. It is about asking the right questions, knowing where to find answers and being willing to help others along the way.

That same spirit extends into the community. Donald and his spouse, Harold Rains, have long supported Portland area charitable organizations. Later this fall, Donald will also receive a local Excellence Award recognizing his leadership, generosity and contributions to the real estate community.

More than three decades into his career, Donald is still curious, still learning and still showing up. For him, experience has its greatest value when it is shared and put to work for others.
