At a construction site in West Lake Grove, realtors traded listings for lumber—helping lay the groundwork for generational impact.
At the West Lake Grove build site in Lake Oswego, Habitat for Humanity Portland Region is thoughtfully creating a future that’s anything but ordinary. The organization is constructing 23 affordable homes for low- to moderate-income families—each one sustainably built and permanently affordable.

A Community Designed to Uplift
What sets the West Lake Grove development apart isn’t just the Earth Advantage Platinum-certified construction. It’s the promise that no family will pay more than 30% of their income on housing. That means families can break free from the cycle of rising rents and finally build a future rooted in ownership, not survival.
Partnership is at the heart of these homes, too. Future homeowners contribute sweat equity, working alongside volunteers while attending classes on financial literacy and home maintenance. The result? A 92% high school graduation rate among Habitat homeowner families, improved health outcomes, and long-term financial stability.
“People don’t just move in—they grow here,” said Tor Ostrom, Senior Business Engagement Officer at Habitat for Humanity Portland Region.
“And that changes everything.”

Meet the Volunteers Behind the Build
Among the volunteers lending their hands are Angie Lawton-Wallesen and Noelle Craddock, both realtors with Cascade Hasson Sotheby’s International Realty. They may not have had prior construction experience, but that didn’t stop them from jumping in. Habitat provides on-site training, making it easy for anyone—from first-timers to seasoned pros—to safely contribute.
“You don’t need experience—you just need to care,” said Noelle, after learning to operate tools like nail guns, chalk lines, and skill saws. With a background in human resources, interior design, and home décor, Noelle brings a unique, full-service perspective to her real estate work—and to the build site.
Angie brings her own strong sense of purpose to the project. A lifelong Oregonian known for her warmth and unwavering commitment to service, she views real estate as more than a profession—it’s a way to make a difference.
“My dad was an orthopedic surgeon, and he treated people who could pay—and people who couldn’t,” she shared.
“That’s how I see real estate. I work with clients who have a $200,000 budget and those over a million—they all get the same service. Everyone deserves really good representation, regardless of their price point. That’s why I’m here.”
On their first day onsite, the pair suited up in hard hats, gloves, and tool belts to help frame the community’s future. They were especially impressed by the quality and care that goes into Habitat’s homes—including long-term warranties, energy-efficient materials, and a lasting support system for new homeowners.

A Campaign Framing the Future
Habitat’s work doesn’t stop at the build site. This summer, the organization is launching its Frame a Future campaign to raise awareness and funds for affordable housing in the Portland region. The campaign will culminate in a community celebration on October 1, featuring home tours and showcases of green building practices.
Sustainability is a key pillar of the project: Habitat is recycling construction waste and building with the planet in mind!
More Than a Build Site: The Power of the ReStores
“There’s more than one way to build a home,” says Tor Ostrom.
Habitat for Humanity Portland Region also operates four local ReStores—retail shops that sell new and gently used furniture, building materials, and home goods. Think part Goodwill, part Home Depot, with treasures ranging from vintage cabinetry to high-end couches from Rejuvenation Inc.
Donating to the ReStores helps reduce landfill waste—and every purchase directly supports Habitat’s mission to build more homes like those in West Lake Grove.
“You never know what you’re going to find,” said Ostrom. “And everything sold helps fund more affordable housing.”
